During your stay at Ethiopia Guest Home, you are given an Ethiopian cell phone to use 24 hours a day, free of charge for the duration of your stay. This allows you to give the number to friends and family members back home who would like to stay connected. Incoming calls on the cell phone are free. However, it is extremely expensive to call Ethiopia from the US or Europe. As a result, you’ll want to click on the link below to purchase a calling card which will allow you to pay 20 cents per minute for those calling you in Ethiopia vs. $2 per minute with most landlines.
This is virtual calling card (they don’t send you a card). It allows you to put money from your credit card onto an account. You will be given an 800 number so that it costs your friends and family nothing to use), and a PIN. They will call the toll free line, enter your pin, and enter the number in Ethiopia they wish to call. It would look something like this: Toll free number + PIN + 011 251 114 19 83 67 (which is in fact the main number at Ethiopia Guest Home). A cell phone number would look a bit different (011 251 910 12 34 56).
As you can use this virtual calling card to call anywhere in the world, we recommend you put $20 in the account to ensure you don’t run out while in Ethiopia. If you have funds left in the account, you can use them to call any country…or of course, use it for future calls to Ethiopia.
